Case Study: Kaleigh

Kaleigh was a bright 11 year old girl who was experiencing considerable stress at home and at school. She had trouble remembering things, felt constant pressure and struggled in math. She had great difficulty using words to express herself to the point of not asking questions when she needed to and actively avoiding social situations. Her parents began to worry that if she was struggling this much already, university wasn’t going to be an option.

The Root Causes

Kaleigh’s assessment showed that both her visual and auditory memory where functioning in the disabled range. Her eye tracking was three years behind grade level and greatly reduced her reading comprehension. Her ability to quickly and easily make decisions was several years behind as was her organizational skills, these lead to ongoing problems both academically and socially. Finally, several scores indicated high levels of perfectionism which often paralyzed her with anxiety.

The Solution

After her assessment Breakthroughs in Learning created an Individualised Brain Development Program for Kaleigh to specifically target and develop the skills that were causing her to struggle at home, academically and socially. She attended weekly therapy sessions and elected not to do any optional developmental exercises at home due to her already elevated stress levels.

The Results

Kaleigh’s stress has greatly reduced as her skills have developed. She is able to do her homework independently instead of needing extensive assistance. She is contributing in class by asking questions and offering answers. Reassessment showed that the overall average of her skills went from High Average to the Gifted range. Her dramatically improved memory skills have made a significant impact in her grades and her enhanced social skills have enabled her to interact with others confidently.
